Adaptation to Climate Change: Building Resilience and Reducing Vulnerability
نویسنده
چکیده
Given the far-ranging adverse impacts of climate change, adaptation must be an integral component of an effective strategy to address climate change, along with mitigation. Adaptation should be approached as an opportunity to rethink development as usual, and should be based on “upstream” interventions that will yield benefi ts regardless of specifi c, climate-related events in the future. This policy brief examines win-win strategies for development and adaptation in three key sectors—namely, ecosystems and natural resources, food and agriculture, and health—and focuses on interventions that will be valuable regardless of the uncertainties we face in determining precise climate change impacts. Anticipate, Absorb, Reshape: Current Progress on Three Key Capacities for Climate Resilience
The Paris Agreement acknowledged the importance of climate change adaptation and climate resilience by establishing the global goal for adaptation as “enhancing adaptive capacity, strengthening resilience and reducing vulnerability to climate change”. The Paris Agreement also established a ‘global stocktake’ to regularly assess progress towards the purpose of the Agreement, including the global...
متن کاملBuilding human resilience: the role of public health preparedness and response as an adaptation to climate change.
Global climate change will increase the probability of extreme weather events, including heatwaves, drought, wildfire, cyclones, and heavy precipitation that could cause floods and landslides. Such events create significant public health needs that can exceed local capacity to respond, resulting in excess morbidity or mortality and in the declaration of disasters. Human vulnerability to any dis...
متن کاملRisks, vulnerabilities and resilience in a context of climate change
Agricultural activities are by nature prone to risks and uncertainties of various nature, both biophysical, abiotic, climatic, environmental, biotic (pests, diseases) and economic. Many of these risks have a climatic component and most of them will be affected by climate change, either in intensity, scope or frequency. The aim of this paper is not to review the increasing literature on risks, o...

Fisheries support livelihood of over half a billion of people globally. Many of these people live in coastal regions of developing countries; and have limited capacity to adapt and build resilience in the face of climate change. This research assesses the biophysical and socioeconomic characteristics of fishers in four coastal communities, Komenda, Elmina, Cape coast and Morree, in Ghana. Stru...
متن کاملClimate change and disaster management.
Climate change, although a natural phenomenon, is accelerated by human activities. Disaster policy response to climate change is dependent on a number of factors, such as readiness to accept the reality of climate change, institutions and capacity, as well as willingness to embed climate change risk assessment and management in development strategies. These conditions do not yet exist universal...
